Dr Tania Pilley
Child and Adult Psychologist
"Understanding how and why we think the way we do is the first step that will enable you to change self-defeating behaviours and start living a more satisfying life."
I have an eclectic and dynamic approach to therapy in response to the individual, rather than limiting myself to a specific model. I often use different techniques from different models if I think they would be helpful. As I work with people of all ages my goal is to develop a relationship where-by we both work together to explore different strategies. As an example, some children who have experienced trauma find it difficult to express their feelings I often involve my horses and dog in the therapy if I think it might help the process.

About: Neurofeedback
The human brain is the most complex system in the Universe, with a vast network of nerve cells that communicate. Messages flow from the brain to the body and back again in a mind-body connection. The brain communicates within itself and the interfaces with the outside world including electricity. The goal of neurofeedback is to tap into the electrical activity with the goal of enhancing learning, thinking, emotions and behaviour.
The brain's electrical activity creates brain waves. Reinforcing desired brain wave patterns in the exact moment they happen, is the fundamental principle behind neurofeedback feedback tones are recognised by the brain because they are in sync with the rhythmicity of the brain. In the same way, a dancer moves his body in synch with the music.
About: Alpha-Stim
The Alpha-Stim is an electrotherapy device prescribed around the world to treat chronic, acute and post-traumatic pain, and anxiety, insomnia and depression. It is supported by independent research, has no serious side effects and is easy to use.
It works by transmitting a unique electrical waveform to modulate cell signals to return to normal functioning.

The Heartmath technology enables you to learn the optimum state for creating coherence and in turn a reduce your stress by proving real-time feedback. This helps to improve sleep, restores energy, balance emotions and increase focus.
About: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful beliefs and attitudes which in turn can reduce distress. It also teaches personal coping strategies that target solving current problems. It is an evidence-based technique designed to treat depression, anxiety and trauma.
About: Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing is an evidence treatment used to treat trauma. The person being treated is asked to recall a distressing image and the therapist shifts the distress associated with the image by facilitating eye movements similar to what happens in REM sleep.
